TOEFL Overview

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a standardized test that measures the English language proficiency of the non-native English speakers who wish to enroll in an English speaking university.

Moreover, this test is accepted by various English-speaking academic and professional institutions all over the world. The test is given in English and is administered via the internet.

The TOEFL test lengths about 3 hours with 4 sections in total - Speaking and Writing, Listening, and Reading.

Listening Overview

The TOEFL Listening section is designed to measure your ability to understand conversations and lectures in English. It includes listening for:

• Basic comprehension;
• Pragmatic understanding (speaker's attitude and degree of certainty) and connecting and synthesizing information;

There are 2 types of listening items in the Speaking section — lectures and conversations. Both use campus-based language.

• 3–4 lectures, each 3–5 minutes long, with 6 questions per lecture;
• 2–3 conversations with 2 speakers, each 3 minutes long, with 5 questions per conversation

You can take notes on any audio item throughout the test to help you answer questions. You have 41 to 57 minutes to complete the section.

Purpose questions (This kind of question asks you about the purpose of the conversation or lecture)

Specific Detail Questions (To answer these kinds of questions you will have to remember particular information)

Function Questions (This kind of question won't ask you what does the word mean, but it asks you why the speaker says what he says)

Attitude Questions (To answer these, you will have to use implied information to decide what the speaker’s thoughts or feelings are at some point in the scene)

Organization Questions (These kinds of questions ask you to understand how the information or details are organized in the conversation or in the lecture)
